Max B was enrolled in an undergraduate business degree at Cork Institute of Technology in Ireland, but soon realized he was more interested in data and programming in his senior year. He came across Coursera and decided to get acquainted with R programming as part of the Data Science Specialization.
After a few different courses and with new credentials in his back-pocket, he applied for a summer internship at Google. Standing out from the rest, he was selected to come on-site. His interviewer was impressed with his knowledge of R programming and asked him how he built his skill-set. Max mentioned Coursera, and as it turns out, the interviewer had also taken the same MOOC too. He ended up exceeding expectations and getting the internship.
He implemented his programming knowledge for several projects, and at the end of the summer, his supervisor encouraged Max to apply for a job in another department. Unsure whether to pursue this opportunity or set his sights on graduate school, Max decided to take a chance, revamp his resume with his Coursera credentials and apply.
Max has now been working full time for Google Ireland for the past year. He credits Coursera in giving him the competitive advantage to stand out among the rest.

Kurt Apen joins the Coursera team as a veteran consumer technology marketing leader who has spent the last 20 years building global brands. Most recently Kurt has been leading teams at The Walt Disney Company for the Playdom business unit, where his focus has been on building global mass market audiences for the company’s social and mobile free-to-play games, including a several of top ten app store titles.
In addition, Kurt spent over a decade at eBay where he focused on brand and marketplace development. He led multiple marketing teams including marketing strategy and planning, consumer marketing, loyalty and CRM. Kurt started with eBay as the first marketing hire for eBay Motors in 2001. eBay Motors quickly emerged as the most visited automotive website, consistently making it one of the company’s top grossing categories—even with negative sentiment about buying and selling used cars online. Later in his eBay career, Kurt led the creation of eBay Bucks, a loyalty program which contributed significantly to the eBay marketplace turnaround from 2009-2011.
Kurt has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BS in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.
Renata Pacheco founded, and is currently the Executive Director, of a 25-year old corporate communications company in Brazil called RWF360. Looking to develop a new management model for her company earlier this year, Renata’s 23-year old son—who works in advertising and has also taken online courses to broaden his professional knowledge—introduced her to Coursera.
Renata immediately enrolled in Developing Innovative Ideas for New Companies from the University of Maryland (re-starting today), which is part of Coursera’s popular Entrepreneurship Specialization helping learners identify opportunities based on real customer needs, develop business models and build successful companies. Armed with new skills, the course gave her the tools to produce a large rebranding project where she led her team to create a new company vision, position and even target a tech partner to boost their clients’ digital presence.
Reneta proudly shares her Verified Certificate on her Linkedin profile and continues to take Coursera courses in order to build skills that effectively manage and shape her company for the future.
