Nick Kersting worked as an IT consultant for five years after receiving his PhD in Physics.
Wanting to try something new, he started exploring options to build additional skills and came across Machine Learning on Coursera. After the course, he used his newly acquired techniques for topics such as clustering and neural networks, to build a personal website demonstrating his knowledge of the subject. This is what caught the attention of the tech giant, IBM.
Based on his credentials, Kersting was invited to interview at IBM by presenting to a panel of 30 employees who were all part of their machine learning lab. To his surprise, most of the questions asked were related to topics in machine learning, which he had no problem answering thanks to the materials and skills acquired from Professor Ng’s Machine Learning course.
Thanks to Coursera, Kersting now has a new career direction as a Senior Software Engineer at IBM.
