Heriot-Watt University collaborates with Coursera to launch online Masters in Computer Science

Heriot-Watt University has announced that it is partnering with Coursera, Inc. (NYSE: COUR), one of the largest online learning platforms in the world, to launch a new MSc in Computer Science that welcomes students from all academic backgrounds. The MSc will give learners across the UK – and worldwide – the chance to develop expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and programming at a university known for its cutting-edge research in robotics and AI.

The program’s flexible admission approach makes advanced computer science education more accessible than ever. Students can try the first course in Programming and Program Design, and upon successful completion, gain direct entry into the full master’s program – regardless of their previous experience in computing.

Students will learn the most in-demand technology skills through practical, real-world focused courses including:

  • Data Mining and Machine Learning: Learn how to analyze large datasets and build predictive models
  • Artificial Intelligence: Master the fundamentals of AI and how to apply them to real problems
  • Software Design and Engineering: Build end-to-end software solutions from concept to deployment
  • Industry Specialisation: Earn valuable professional certificates from tech giants like Google, IBM, and Meta at no extra cost

The degree will be delivered by Heriot-Watt University, combining 30 years of flexible and affordable, distance learning experience with their position as one of the UK’s top institutions for technology research. The university’s track record of excellence in computer science education dates back to launching Scotland’s first computer science degree.

“As the highest-ranked university in Scotland for graduate outcomes, we are committed to equipping our students for success, no matter where they are in the world”, said Russell Brooks, CEO of Heriot-Watt Online. “This program, made available through Coursera, offers an accessible and flexible learning experience that is closely aligned with the needs of the fast-growing tech industry and will provide students with the skills and knowledge that employers demand, enabling them to accelerate their careers in a digital-first world.”

“We’re thrilled to work with Heriot-Watt University to bring this innovative computer science degree to Coursera,” said Marni Baker Stein, Chief Content Officer, Coursera. “Amid the rapid digital transformation across industries, there’s a growing global demand for technology leaders. This program makes world-class computer science education both accessible and flexible. Students worldwide can now earn a respected British master’s degree from a leading institution without disrupting their careers, building both the technical expertise and professional network needed to thrive in today’s digital economy.”

Coursera currently supports the skills development of 4.2 million UK learners and continues to expand its degree portfolio, which includes more than 55 degrees from 30 of the world’s best universities, and currently serves more than 22,500 students.

The program can be completed in as little as 18 months, fitting around work and other commitments. Students learn through a mix of recorded video lessons and live online sessions with faculty, allowing them to study at times that work best for them.

Applications for the May 2025 intake open on November 27, 2024. Interested students can register their interest and enroll in the course using the following link: https://www.coursera.org/degrees/msc-computer-science-heriot-watt.
